The present study explores semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) for optical amplification in wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) communication systems. In optical communication, propagating signals often require amplification to compensate for attenuation. SOAs offer a compact solution for signal amplification. In this thesis, a four-channel WDM vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) based system with resonant cavity enhanced photodetector (RCEPD) demultiplexing demonstrates a need for optical amplification. A computer-aid software program, OptiSim, is used to model an optical transmission link utilizing SOAs. Modeling is carried out to determine the behavior of the SOA as the SOA approaches the saturation regime. This is followed by experiments utilizing SOAs for optical amplification of WDM VCSEL signals.
